KEPCO, the largest public enterprise of Korea, is a total energy solutions provider covering the all areas involving energy including nuclear, thermal, renewables generation; transmission and distribution; sales; energy R&D; etc. KEPCO’s family of companies are equipped with expertise in various energy fields – four subsidiaries in nuclear (KHNP, KEPCO E&C, KEPCO NF, KEPCO KPS), five thermal gencos (KOEN, KOMIPO, KOWEPO, KOSPO, EWP) and four in renewables (KOWP, JHWP, KEPCO Solar, HSPO), etc.

Our vision is to create a world of clean and smart energy in alignment with the global trend of energy transition and digitalization. To that end, KEPCO will continue to practice outside-the-box thinking and innovation.

Over more than a century as Korea’s leader in the energy sector, KEPCO has grown as a company with assets worth more than 1.8 trillion US dollars. As of the end of 2020, we are engaged in more than 50 projects in 28 countries around the world in the area of nuclear, thermal, renewables, transmission & distribution, etc.

One on-going project in particular is the UAE Barakah nuclear power plant project that was signed on December 27, 2009. Based on 40 years of experience and outstanding technical prowess in the nuclear sector, the prime contractor KEPCO is building the very first project in the world to simultaneously construct four nuclear units. The first unit of the BNPP project has successfully passed performance tests and begun commercial operation on April 1, 2021.At KEPCO, we are committed to making our contribution to the nuclear projects around the world, utilizing our successful experience and outstanding capabilities accumulated from the UAE BNPP project. We are currently exploring opportunities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the U.K., Republic of South Africa, Uzbekistan, Turkey, India, Vietnam, etc.Supplying eco-friendly energy around the globe will continue to remain our priority. Over the long term, we will serve as an energy leader through increased presence in the global nuclear market and development of new energy businesses using big data, AI, IoT, etc.

Business Area

KEPCO is a all-encompassing electricity utility covering various fields of energy including nuclear, thermal, renewables, transmission & distribution, sales, R&D, etc.

Nuclear Power Plant EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction)

In the 50 years since 1971, the commencement of the construction of Kori unit 1, Korea has constructed 26 units of NPPs in Korea. At present, we are constructing four more units at home and four more in the UAE. These experiences are what makes us capable of delivering high-quality, state-of-the-art nuclear power plant.

Project Management

KEPCO has developed an optimized project management system and qualified human resources for project management. In nuclear power plant projects, we are equipped with outstanding project management skills in all spectrum of work such as construction and commissioning schedule, project cost, resource management (manpower and equipment), HSE, quality control, licensing, public relations, etc., making us the optimal partner for on-time NPP construction.

Localization Support

Under KEPCO’s lead, Korea has emerged as the first country to transition from a nuclear energy importer to an exporter. In the process, the localization of all equipment involved in a nuclear power plant including the Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS), Turbine Generator (TG), Balance of Plant (BOP), etc., was completed. Korea is also fully self-reliant on NPP design & engineering, construction and nuclear fuel manufacturing. We are proud to say that we can provide optimized localization program that meets the needs of our customers.

Human Resource Development

We know the importance of cultivating skilled and qualified human resources for any nuclear entrant. For 50 years since the first deployment of nuclear power plants, Korea has been committed to developing human resource development programs (HRD) and training infrastructure for all nuclear-related works for academia, research, regulatory, policy and industry. The HRD program for the UAE BNPP is the result of all our accumulated know-how and experience, and the program has been key in the successful commercial operation of BNPP unit 1. Our bespoke HRD program is available to our customers to meet each of their unique needs.

Major Projects · Achievements

01UAE Nuclear Project (Barakah Nuclear Power Plant unit1-4)

KEPCO contracted four units of APR1400 nuclear power plants in Barakah, UAE (BNPP project) in December 27, 2009 utilizing its robust experience and technological excellence in nuclear power plant. Even with the compounded challenges coming from the high temperature and humidity of the desert, the UAE Barakah project is progressing successfully. In particular, the BNPP unit 1 commenced commercial operation in April 1, 2021 and is currently supplying six percent of the overall electricity in the UAE. The BNPP unit 2 completed fuel load in March of 2021, and the remaining units (3&4) are undergoing commissioning. Once all four units come online, the BNPP will supply a quarter of electricity used in the country and reduce approximately 21 million metric tons of annual carbon emissions.

02KEDO* Nuclear Project

The KEDO nuclear power plant, the first overseas nuclear project of KEPCO, was conducted in accordance to the Agreed Framework between the U.S. and North Korea (DPRK). The project aimed to build two 1000MW units of pressurized water reactor. KEPCO became the prime contractor of the project in December 1999. The project was terminated in May 2006 due to issues involving DPRK’s nuclear program. However, the experience, knowledge, know-how, and human resources accumulated from the KEDO project has been a cornerstone for the success of KEPCO’s overseas nuclear project.
* KEDO (Korean Penninsula Energy Development Organization): International Organization created to promote the initiative to build Korean standardized pressurized water reactor to North Korea for the implementation of the Agreed Framework signed between the United States and North Korea on October 1994.

03Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Large Nuclear Power Plant (LNPP) Project

In September 2017, KEPCO received an invitation for the development of The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) nuclear power plant project for two units of 1200-1600MW reactor. We submitted our response to Saudi Arabia’s Request for Information (RFI) in December the same year, and was selected as one of the official supplier candidates by the Kingdom on June 29, 2018. KEPCO has been actively involved KSA’s nuclear program, including being the first among the candidates to host large-scale roadshow in the country, submitting a comprehensive set of bid deliverables, and participating in technical workshops and site visits, etc.

04United Kingdom Nuclear Project

KEPCO has been looking into acquiring the Moorside nuclear power plant project since 2017 to enter the UK nuclear market. At present, the UK government is developing the details of its Regulated Asset Base (RAB*) model, which is to be applied to new nuclear power projects in the country once finalized. We continue to hold discussions with related entities in regards to the UK nuclear project.
* Regulated Asset Base(RAB) : Model to lower the tariff through project cost saving from increased private sector participation. Private sector participation is induced through reduced risks from various measures including government support.

05Republic of South Africa (RSA) Nuclear Project

KEPCO submitted our response to the Request for Information(RFI) for the 2.5GW nuclear power plant project planned by South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy on October 2020. We continue to explore ways to cooperate with RSA on its new nuclear power plant project.
